The return of Lil’ Sparky

Child’s size, red velvet ”Sun Devil” costume can be found displayed at the Tempe History Museum. The costume includes a long sleeved shirt, pants and a hood with devil horns. Originally the outfit had a tail, but a fan from university of arizona ripped it off in the last game in 1961. Gary Richardson began appearing at ASU football games as the little Sun Devil when he was in the 6th grade, and was a regular mascot from 1959-1961. He always appeared along side an adult sized Sun Devil. Richardson eventually graduated from ASU, and became an Arizona state senator who was sometimes referred to as “Senator Sparky”. The fifth installment of Sun Devil Fan Stories - Michael Graham provides an in-depth look into this season’s Lil’ Sparky.
